Block Parties

One of our favorite ways to connect with our community at large is through our Community Block Parties! This is a great opportunity to not only serve our neighbors but also our GUM Staff as this gives our team the opportunity to build those crucial, life-giving relationships.

If your team is running a block party this is what it will look like:

  • Block Parties are held on Tuesdays evenings from 5pm-7pm at Wright Cuney Park

  • These are low-key, come and go events that usually have low programming but contain a meal

  • Your team will be responsible for

    • Advertising for the event. We will have flyers ready to go. Your team will be responsible for passing those flyers out Monday as you pick up students for street camp and then reminding people on Tuesday. We want to make sure we invite as many people as possible.

    • Providing the meal. This is typically simple foods that can be taken to go like hotdogs or Frito Pies, chips and some kind of drink. We usually plan for about 100 (this includes your team, gum staff and neighbors)

      • GUM has a drink coolers and a grill onsite that is available for your team to use

    • Setting up for the event. This includes

      • Preparing a playlist and setting up a speaker for music (GUM has a bluetooth speaker on site)

      • Setting up tables for food distribution (GUM has tables as well)

    • Prepping community games. Groups will typically will bring chalk, hula hoops and assorted balls. We’ve also had groups do cake or candy walks. Feel free to be creative!

    • Cleaning up at the end of the night. This looks like tearing down tables, cleaning up games, sweeping the park for trash and make sure any GUM equipment gets back to it’s proper place.

*If there is another group participating in the block party these responsibilities will be split between you. You will be connected by email to be able to prep before hand.
